Sustainability Strategy for the World's Largest Children's Museum
Office of Challenge Programs
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the largest children’s museum in the world and includes many humanities-based programs and learning opportunities for youth. The Children’s Museum has implemented numerous sustainability initiatives over the past two decades, including installing a green roof, hosting Earth Day celebrations, and implementing programming related to conservation.
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis will use the NEH Climate Smart award to advance its sustainability strategy even further. The analysis of data from various assessments will create a detailed plan for reducing the museum's environmental footprint. These reports will provide the museum with a better understanding of its environmental impact, specifically focusing on areas such as energy use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The sustainability strategy will help guide future developments in facilities and operations at the museum and allow for expansion to its collections and educational programming. It will not only help the museum reduce its environmental impact, but also inspire visitors and the local community to learn about sustainable practices through public programming, campus signage, and community-based initiatives.
