SVUSD teacher selected for summer workshop

The Tsongas Industrial History Center at University of Massachusetts Lowell has selected Janet Payne of Sycamore Elementary School in Simi Valley to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer workshop for teachers titled “Social Movements and Reform in Industrializing America: The Lowell Experience.”

The history center is a partnership of Lowell National Historical Park and the UMass Lowell College of Education.  Payne was selected from an applicant group of 199 teachers from around the United States.

NEH Summer Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshops use historic sites to address central themes and issues in American history, government, literature, art, music and related subjects in the humanities.

Payne will join 36 other summer scholars from dozens of states in a weeklong workshop at Lowell National Historical Park.

Through presentations and on-site investigations in America’s first large-scale planned industrial city, as well as field studies of Old Sturbridge Village and Walden Pond, workshop participants explore changes in work, society, culture and the environment from 1820 to 1860, as well as subsequent reform activity related to labor, women’s rights and slavery.
