Stephanie Browner, Dean of Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, Receives National Endowment for the Humanities Grant

On March 28, 2019, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded $28.6 million to 233 humanities projects across the country.  

The Charles Chesnutt Digital Archive, founded by Dean Stephanie Browner in 1997, is among the recipients of the NEH grant, receiving $292,627.

Since its creation in 1965, NEH has awarded more than $5.6 billion for humanities projects through more than 64,000 grants.

“These new NEH-supported projects will help shore up the nation’s most valuable assets: its history, literature, historic sites, regional traditions, and cultural institutions,” said NEH Chairman Jon Parrish Peede.

Dean Browner’s grant will assist with making the Chesnutt Archive more comprehensive, accessible to the public, and up-to-date with digital archive standards. Currently, it offers more than sixty works by Chesnutt, and over 300 reviews of his novels and short stories.
