NEH Now Offering Grants for Temporary, Single-Site Museum Exhibitions

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) will now support the development and implementation of temporary, single-site exhibitions. This major revision to NEH’s funding of museum exhibitions is intended to make it easier for museums and historical societies to apply for funding for temporary exhibitions.   

NEH’s new guidelines for exhibition projects will better accommodate the needs of smaller institutions in underserved areas of the country. At the Planning stage, requests for temporary exhibitions are eligible for up to $40,000. At Implementation, the applicant can request up to $100,000 for an exhibition. NEH plans to commit up to $1 million to these new grants in the next year.

“We hope this new funding opportunity attracts a wide variety of museums, particularly smaller organizations,” explained NEH Acting Chairman Jon Parrish Peede. “We strive to support a diverse range of institutions that bring culture and history to all Americans and expect this initiative to help reach even more underserved audiences with rich humanities programing.”

This change has been incorporated into NEH’s existing Public Humanities Projects grant program from the Division of Public Programs. Public Humanities Projects grants support projects that bring the ideas and insights of the humanities to life for general audiences through exhibitions, community conversations, or historic site interpretations. Projects must engage humanities scholarship to analyze significant themes in disciplines such as history, literature, ethics, and art history.

The next application deadline for this grant program is January 10, 2018.
