UVA to Celebrate NEH's 50th Anniversary with Forum on Humanities for the Modern World
The University of Virginia, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, will host Human/Ties, a four-day open forum this September to commemorate the NEH's 50th anniversary and explore how the humanities are integrated in the public sphere.
"The humanities affect our lives in very real ways every day," said NEH Chairman William D. Adams. "They help us make sense of and appreciate today's increasingly complex and interconnected world. This 50th anniversary celebration will provide a terrific stage for some of the globe's most creative thinkers to share their reflections on the discipline -- and why it matters."
Human/Ties will run from Sept. 14-17 and include panel discussions, performances, film screenings, interviews, and art exhibits. Many of the world's leading scholars, writers, artists, and cultural experts will engage with one another over crucial questions about race, war, the environment, globalization, and democracy.
Featured speakers include author Sir Salman Rushdie; Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates; David Simon, the writer and producer of HBO's "The Wire"; author Junot Díaz; Jamelle Bouie, the chief political correspondent for Slate Magazine; Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson; and chef, activist, and author Alice Waters.
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is the chief underwriter of Human/Ties, with additional support provided by the University of Virginia and the NEH. The forum will be free and open to the public.
"Human/Ties is the perfect celebration of 50 years of the NEH," said Adams. "It's also a perfect way to see where the next 50 might take us."
