President Bush Appoints James Herbert as Acting Chairman of National Endowment for the Humanities

President Bush has appointed James Herbert, director of the Division of Research Programs at the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), as the Endowment's acting chairman.

Dr. Herbert has been at NEH since 1989. He has also served as the Endowment's director of the Division of Education Programs. He holds a Ph.D. in the history of ideas from Brandeis University and has served on the faculties of the Catholic University of America, the University of the District of Columbia and the University of Maryland. He has held research and administrative posts at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the College Board, as well as the American Council on Education Fellowship at the U.S. Department of Education.

Dr. Herbert will serve as acting chairman until December, when the post of chairman will be taken by Bruce Cole, Distinguished Professor of Fine Arts and chairman of the Department of the History of Art at Indiana University, Bloomington.
