Powell Gardens to host Frida Kahlo’s Garden

Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden, is the only Kansas City-area venue to host Frida Kahlo’s Garden, an in-depth exhibition focusing on the influences and inspirations behind Frida Kahlo’s (1907–1954) body of work.

Offering installations mimicking the garden setting at Casa Azul, the home Kahlo shared with her husband, Diego Rivera , historical images, information about Mexican culture and replicas of works, the exhibition opens April 6 and kicks off that evening with a premiere event featuring food, drink, live music, a Frida performance and a painting demonstration.

“This exhibition focuses on Frida Kahlo’s relationship with plants and the inspiration behind her art,” Kristy Peterson, director of Education, Interpretation and Outreach for Powell Gardens, said. “I encourage everyone to attend the exhibition premiere to experience a taste of the KC Repertory Theatre’s performance ‘Frida Kahlo’ by Vanessa Severo, enjoy live music performed by Maria the Mexican, observe a live painting demonstration by Vania Soto, and taste Mexican cuisine prepared by chef Renee Kelly.”

This exhibition is made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Frida Kahlo’s Garden is adapted from the exhibition, "FRIDA KAHLO: ART, GARDEN, LIFE," organized by guest curator Adriana Zavala at The New York Botanical Garden.
