Hard lessons at Teaching Black History Conference

Jania Hoover, a teacher from Dallas, Texas, made a presentation on “Black History is American History.” Hoover said she wanted to become a history teacher so she could teach it the way it should be taught.

Terrance Lewis, a teacher in Columbus, Georgia, is one of the presenters. He said before the conference he would tell his audience of teachers how to use primary sources to engage all students.

Lewis told Hoover his public school in Georgia requires lessons in Confederate history during Confederate history month in April.

Hoover said the National Endowment for the Humanities presents conferences every summer that have a lot of good information. Teachers don’t have to reinvent the wheel, she said.
